Crescent moon filled with roses on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon outline contains several rose blooms with leaves and stems, all drawn in black linework. The roses are shaded with fine hatching and small highlights left in the skin, and the outline is bold and even. The tattoo is shown on a pale forearm against a brick wall, with the moon centred in the frame.

Mrs Ada Penrose had kept the walled garden at Coldharbour for thirty-one winters, and in all that time she had never pruned the roses on the north wall before the new moon. Her nephew Tom thought it was superstition. He said so every spring while he hauled the barrow past the glasshouse, and every spring she handed him the secateurs anyway and told him to mind the thorns.

The year the frost came early, the moon hung low over the chimney stacks like a paring from a brass dish, and the roses on the wall had gone black at the edges. Tom found her kneeling in the gravel at midnight with a lantern, sorting cuttings into two heaps. Those are for the cold frame, she said. These are for the moon. He asked what that meant. She only pointed at the sky, where the crescent had caught a thread of cloud and looked, for a moment, as if it were wearing a wreath.
Come morning, the cuttings in the moon heap had rooted in a jam jar on the sill, every one of them pushing out pale leaves. Tom never understood how. He only knew that when the moon waned, the rose beds in the walled garden bloomed twice as thick as the year before, and the petals curled inward toward the sky as though they meant to fill the empty curve.
