Ornamental lattice tattoo on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical ornamental motif in black ink sits on the upper arm, with a central lattice of crossing lines and small dots. Curled scrolls, pointed terminals and a tapering stem extend outwards from the central panel. The image is black and white, with soft shadow around the arm and a plain dark background.

No, sit where the light falls, because the old wall is what I want you to see. You can't make out the trellis from the lane any more, the ivy has had it, but my grandmother's grandmother trained the pear tree along that lattice of split ash, and every crossing had a nail and a dot of tar where the wood met. Count them if you like. Forty-one, she said, and forty-one was the number of trees she was owed by the Pyke brothers for the summer she kept their bees alive.

Now the Pyke boys were a bad lot, and the August they came to take the cider press was the hottest anyone could remember. The wasps were drunk on windfalls. The curled tendrils that grew out from the trellis, those scrolls like a question nobody wanted to answer, had gone brown at the tips. Nell Pyke, who was not a Pyke at all but married in, walked out to the great stem with a cup of water and a knife, and she cut one tendril clean and laid it on the step, pointed end toward the gate.
The boys stopped at the gate. They did not come through. By evening every tree on that side had dropped its fruit into the grass, and the brothers had gone down the lane still arguing, and the dots between the crossings were, she swore, seed pips counted in a row.
That is all there is to it. Take an apple from the basket on your way out. Mind the wasps.
