Black geometric tattoo of an arrow, stippled diamond and circles running down the inner forearm, in fine line and dotwork.

Geometric arrow and diamond on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo combines an arrow, a stippled diamond and a set of intersecting circles with dots, small triangles and thin connecting lines. The diamond is shaded with dotwork, while the arrow and surrounding construction lines are fine and crisp. The design runs diagonally down a pale forearm against a blurred grey background, with a dark maroon top visible at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The brass arrow above Mabry's chandlery had pointed the wrong way since the spring the tide took the ferry, and nobody in Skerrow would touch it but old Tamsin Rowe. She climbed the ladder with her dividers, a stick of chalk and a tin of nails, and sat astride the ridge of the roof while the gulls argued below her.

She drew a diamond on the slates first, then two circles that touched at their edges, then a smaller one inside them where the lines crossed. She ran fine chalk threads from each corner to a dot she had pricked into the gutter board years before. The men on the quay laughed and sent up a pot of tea, and she thanked them and kept on counting under her breath.

The work took her through the night. By dawn the chalk lines ran from the diamond to the bell buoy, to the lamp on the breakwater, and back to the church weathervane, like rigging on a ship that had never left its mooring. When she loosened the bolt and turned the arrow with one finger, it swung round with a small click and settled, its point aimed squarely at the gap between the headlands.

The boats that went out that morning came home by noon, every one of them, and the fishwives said it was the first calm day they had seen since Lent. Tamsin came down the ladder grey with dust and asked for her tea cold. Her grandson still has the dividers, and when he is asked how the arrow found its mark, he says only that she measured the thing it was pointing at and never once the arrow.
