A white ink drawing of a hamsa hand with an ornate lotus-style mandala across the palm and intricate scrollwork on the fingers. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The card was black as harbour water, and Nadia had spoiled three sheets before her aunt took the knife from her hand and showed her how to breathe between cuts. Every ornament on Lantern Row was cut from a single fold, her aunt said, so that what you made on one side would stand true on the other. Nadia wanted to make a hand. Her aunt said hands were for people who had already learned patience.

The boats had been out since Tuesday in weather nobody liked. The widow Halvorsen came in at dusk with a cracked lamp and asked for something to tie to her husband's mooring rope, something that would bring him in. Nadia's aunt sent her to the back room for the fine white ink pens and told her to draw the palm first, then the five fingers, then fill the centre with petals that opened like a lotus at dawn.

Nadia drew until the lamp burned low. She stippled the edges of the thumb with dotted shadow so the hand seemed to lean into the dark, and she curled each finger into a scroll like a fern uncoiling. When she set the cut paper on the sill, the white lines glowed against the black, and her aunt said nothing, only nodded toward the window.

At first light the boats came round the point, all three of them, low and slow. Mrs Halvorsen wept on the quay and pressed a coin into Nadia's palm, and Nadia closed her fingers over it the way the paper hand would have held a thing it meant to keep.
