Ornamental mandala full sleeve
Geometric · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo covers the arm from shoulder to wrist with dense, fine-lined mandala and paisley-style ornaments, including a sunflower-like rosette. Black linework and shading dominate, with loose blue watercolour splashes and dark ink spatter scattered across the skin. The photo is taken from the side against a bookshelf background, with the arm in sharp focus.

Dear Hettie, the scaffold came down on Tuesday and the wind has been at my tea ever since. You will laugh, but I spent the whole morning on the gatehouse arch with a brush and a magnifier, trying to decide whether the rosette above the portcullis was a sunflower or a wheel. Mr Dunmore says it is a wheel, for the mill that used to sit under the walls, but the stone has been seeded with petals so fine I could not count them.

The rain came through on Wednesday and left the north face spotted like a blue egg. Where the lime wash had weathered off, the carving showed in dark lines, all paisley hooks and curling stems, the sort of work you would expect on a prayer book rather than a wall that has been losing its roof since the old king's grandfather. I copied the whole run of it into my sketchbook, the ferns, the spirals, the small eye at the centre of each medallion, then stood back and found my own pencil had drawn the same pattern without my meaning it to.
Dunmore asked if I meant to stay on through the winter. I said the mortar would not set in frost, so yes, a few more weeks. He grinned and said the castle does that to people, gets its ornaments into their hands.
I have enclosed a rubbing of the rosette. Hold it to the window and you will see it is not a sunflower at all but an eye, and it is looking back at the gate. Yours, Ruth.
