Ornamental mandala tattoo on the back of a hand
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on dark leather, showing a large black and grey ornamental design across the back that spans from the wrist to the knuckles. The design combines diamond shapes, scrolling curves, fringed edges and stippled dots, with finer lines on the fingers. Shading is kept to soft grey tones and the composition is centred on the hand with the bracelets visible at the wrist.

The third wagon had gone under the salt crust the week before, and still the council of Vell wanted another pattern. Ysolde Marr sat at her loom in the back room of the dye house with a reed pen and a board of cured leather, because the old drivers said a route was only safe if it was drawn on the skin of the one who walked it. She drew the wells first, as small diamonds, each one a day's walk from the last. Then came the scrolls, which were the wind, and the fringes that hung from every edge, which were the dunes that moved in the night and could not be trusted.

Her nephew Tobin watched her work from the doorway with a bowl of cold tea in his hands. He asked why the council's pattern had no diamonds, only spirals, and she told him the council had lost their nerve and wanted everything to look like a flower. He asked whether she would draw one for him. She said that a pattern that was not needed was only decoration, and that decoration had drowned more drivers than the wind had.
On the last night she added one diamond that pointed away from the others, down the length of the hand toward the smallest finger, and when Tobin asked her what it was for she said it was the way back to the gate, which was the only place on the flats that did not move. In the morning the wagons came in across the white ground, one by one, their drivers' wrists marked with those fine black lines. Each man touched the fringe at his cuff as he passed under the arch, and the small tassel at the end of the last diamond swung and settled, pointing at the gate.
