Geometric henna on the back of a hand

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown palm down on a dark speckled surface, with a dense brown henna design covering the back of the hand, the wrist and the fingers. The motifs include a large nested diamond panel, dotted chain-like lines, small teardrop shapes and curling fern or leaf forms along the fingers. The design is a single dark brown stain with no colour ink, and the fine, even lines are shown in clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The paste had to rest overnight, Dilkash said, and I broke that rule the spring I was eleven because my cousin's wedding was on the Saturday and I wanted to be the one who finished her hands. I had sieved the henna twice at the kitchen table in Oldham, its green smell thick in the steam from the kettle, while she sat with her palm flat on a folded tea towel and told me the names of things. The cone was a paper funnel that I had to pinch shut with two fingers. The lemon and sugar went on last, a sticky skin that would keep the stain from drying too fast.

She made me start with the big diamond at the wrist, a door inside a door, and I counted the rings out loud as I drew them so my hand would not drift. The dots came next, a bead chain hung from the diamond to the knuckles, because she said a pattern needs something to hold it together, the way a clothes line holds the washing. The ferns I was allowed to curl as I liked, since the paste wanted to run and a curl was only the paste deciding where to go. My fingers ached and my fingertips went dark brown from the cone, and she laughed at me and said that was the only honest mark I would make all week.

Near the end I let a single dot slide off the line and sit alone beside the largest fern. I wanted to scrape it off and start again, but Dilkash put her hand over mine and said the design forgave a wobble, it was the joins that mattered. In the morning the stain had darkened to the colour of strong tea, and when my cousin lifted her fingers to the light, the stray dot had grown a tiny curl of its own, a seed that the fern had grown around.
