Ornamental panda face design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A front-facing panda head drawn in clean black linework on a white background, with black ears and eye patches. The face and forehead are filled with dense mandala-style patterns, dotwork stippling and scalloped and zigzag borders. The design is centred on the page with plenty of white space around it.

Ada Pell had been up the ladder since breakfast, and the panda's forehead still wanted its scales. Each scallop had to be laid down in one breath with a hairline brush loaded with black enamel, because her hands would not be trusted with a second pass. Below her, the organ grinder was tuning up for the afternoon, and her grandson Tomasz kept calling the animal Mister Bamboo, though there was not a stalk of bamboo anywhere on the board.

The commission had come from the Dunmore Travelling Fair, which wanted a face to hang over the ticket booth: a bear who looked as if he had been drawn by someone who had sat up all night with a pattern book. Ada had painted two hundred shop signs in her life and never once put frost-coloured stipple on a bear's cheeks. She did it anyway, a fleck at a time, while the paint dried tacky under the August sun and the wasps argued over the lemonade on the step.

When she came down to rest her neck, Tomasz was standing with his nose an inch from the board. He asked why the bear's eyes were closed inside all that lace. Ada told him the patterns were a fence, every zigzag a little gate that kept the rest of the world politely outside. He considered this, then pointed at the ruff along the bottom, where one of the great points stood empty and white. She had meant to fill it. Tomasz said to leave it, because the bear needed somewhere to go.

That evening the fair opened, and the lamps came on along the midway. The sign caught the light, and the blank point of the ruff sat at the edge of the glow, pale as a paper boat set loose on a dark pond.
