Nell had been on the scaffold since six, scraping forty years of nicotine off the Sovereign Rooms ceiling, when the rosette under her trowel gave a hollow knock instead of a solid one. Behind the lime was a backing board, and on the board, in pencil gone silver, someone had drawn a long-necked animal inside a ring of curling leaves.

The council wanted the ceiling put back as the 1934 drawings showed, which meant a plain cream medallion over the sprung floor. But those drawings were a clean copy made by a clerk. The original designer, a Mr Lowrie who had died owing the hall three weeks' wages, had built every panel around a face he would never name. Nell kept the pencil lines in her head as she mixed putty, one filigree swirl at a time.
She worked late, dotting the texture the way the old board showed, each tiny point placed and left to set. When the dancers came in the Saturday after, a boy with a clarinet looked up at the ceiling, laughed, then stopped laughing and simply looked.
She left the muzzle bare, as Lowrie had left it, a soft open field of stipple. When the band struck up the first foxtrot and the lights swung across the boards, the dotted face seemed to breathe, and the couples turned beneath it as if someone had told them where to go.
