Ornamental spine tattoos on a back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The image is a split view of two bare backs with long vertical tattoos along the spine. The left tattoo combines bold ornamental diamond motifs with sweeping curled lines that wrap towards the hips. The right tattoo is finer, with a thin central line, dots, crescent and circle motifs, and a small script-like mark near the base. Both pieces use black ink and are shown against plain skin with soft natural light.

Dear Hettie, the tide tables came with the post this morning, and I have pinned them above the range where you used to pin your drawings. Mr Alder says the spring tides will hold until the new moon, so the cutter can go out on Thursday if the wind drops. I have not told him what you asked in your last letter, that I should stop waiting on the harbour wall after dark.

You will laugh, but I have been copying the ironwork from the old boarding house gate onto the back of the ledger, the diamond shapes that repeat down the railings like the bones of a fish. Mrs Pryce cleaned the lamp glass for me on Sunday and asked whether the swirls were a map. I told her they were the way the sea curls back on itself when the stones are low, which she thought was a poor answer. She is probably right.

The moon has been going thin all week, a sliver, then a dot on the glass, then the full circle we used to call the lantern. Last night I stood at the end of the pier and counted the lights of the boats that did not come back in the autumn gale. Eleven. I said the names aloud, which felt foolish, and then the dark over the water went from ink to slate and the first gull started up.

I am sending the brass compass you left on the windowsill. The needle sticks a little on the north point, so tap it twice before you read it. Come home when the moon is full, and we will walk the length of the sea wall together and count the lamps. Your loving sister, Ada.
