Ornamental tattoo above the navel

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of the lower abdomen showing a symmetrical black ornamental design centred just above the navel. The motif has a solid oval centre with radiating points and filigree scrollwork extending to each side, with a vertical element below. The ink is uniformly dark with no colour, and the design fills the centre of the frame above the waistband of blue denim jeans.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you don't remember the fire bell in the autumn of '82. Forty-one years on, and Mr Pryce still has the brass compass that went missing from the staff room that week. I'll tell you how it came back.

Nobody liked the compass. Dorothy Vane, the caretaker, kept it in a biscuit tin and brought it out only for the lost property cupboard, the one with the broken hockey sticks and the three gloves nobody ever claimed. Its face was black with age, cut in scrolls like iron lace, with a round boss at its heart and rays running out to every point of the sky. Ellen Marsh swore it could tell you which of your friends would sell you out. Ellen was wrong about most things, but she was right that the thing had a pull to it.

So on the Thursday before the fair, Ellen took it. Three of us carried it down past the boiler room and across the playing field in the rain, meaning to bury it under the cedar and dig it up at our leisure. We got as far as the wall. We looked back at the school, and the compass turned on its cord in my palm and pointed straight at the staff room window, where a lamp was burning late for a man who had waited all term to catch us.

We were caught, and we were punished, and the compass went home with Mr Pryce that night. He never once mentioned it again. So mind yourselves tonight, all of you, because it has been known to turn in your pocket and point at whoever's been lying.
