Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A person in a red and black patterned knitted jumper stands barefoot on a floral upholstered chair, looking out of a window. The soft natural light and muted interior tones dominate the composition, and the tattoo is shown in black ink only.

The pricking was nearly finished when Solange noticed the damp had got into the parchment again. Forty years of pins had worn the edges soft, and the little holes that made the vine had begun to run into one another, so that a tendril meant to curl looked like a fault in the paper. She held the sheet up to the back-room window in the rue des Fleurs and squinted at the light.

Her apprentice, Anouk, had been sent up to the cupboard above the stairs for the bobbins. She came back with them in a shoebox wrapped in a tea towel and set them down without a word, because she had learned that Solange only spoke when a thing could be mended. 'It's the vine at the bottom,' Solange said. 'Put the pin through the old holes, not the new ones. The pattern remembers where it wanted to go.'

They worked until the bells of Saint-Pierre rang six. Anouk pricked the tendril again, slowly, a hair's width at a time, while Solange wound thread over the pillow and counted pairs under her breath. Across the street the lamplighter had reached the far end, and the glass fogged with their breathing and the warmth of the stove.

When the lace finally came off the pillow it was thin as breath, and every vine ran where it should. Solange cut the last thread with the small curved scissors her mother had used and held the piece against the window. 'There,' she said. 'Now it knows the way home.' Anouk pretended not to see her wipe her eyes on the back of her wrist, and went to put the kettle on.
