World map tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bare forearm extends horizontally from the right edge of the frame, with the hand relaxed and fingers curled at the left. The tattoo is a black outline of a world map covering the upper forearm, with continents drawn in thin, even lines and little shading. The plain red wall, a small wall light and a glimpse of a pink top give the photo a simple, uncluttered composition.

The fuel light has been on since Marla, and the road ahead runs out across the red country like a pencil line someone forgot to finish. You keep the atlas open on the passenger seat, its spine cracked flat at the page where the continents seem to be drifting apart, each coastline holding its breath. Your grandfather drew most of those coastlines by hand, or so the note inside the cover claims, and you have never once trusted a line that thin.

Near the turnoff you find the error. Between two southern shores sits a small island with a name in italics and no shadow, a place that exists only because he put it there to catch anyone who copied him. You had always thought it was a joke. At the roadhouse, a woman wiping down the counter looks at the page over your shoulder and says she knows the island, that it drifts wherever the tide of memory takes it. You pay for the petrol and do not argue.
Back on the bitumen, you start to see outlines everywhere: in the salt pans, in the shadows the mulga throws across the verge, in the grey wash of cloud over the ranges. Each one is a country somebody else decided was real. You pull into a layby, lay the atlas on the bonnet, and trace the phantom island with one finger, pressing hard enough to leave a smear of red dust on the paper.
When the sun drops, the ridges turn the colour of an old photograph, and the island is still there, a shade darker than the sea around it. You understand, finally, that he never hid it to fool anyone. He drew it so that someone would one day stop the car and look.
