Dotwork heart on a thigh above a lace garter

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A heart built from concentric rows of small grey dots sits on the upper thigh of a bare leg. A white lace garter sits just below the tattoo, and a sequinned dress is gathered in one hand at the top of the frame. The shot is softly focused, with a warm wooden floor and a cream rug behind the leg.

Forty-one pins, I counted them twice, because the pricking card had come back from the printer with the inner rings gone soft at the edges. Ada Quayle had her elbows on the cushion and a mouth full of thread, and I told her the heart would not sit true unless every dot was where the card said it was. She told me the card was a liar and her own eye was not.

The order had come up the stairs at six on a Thursday, a lace garter for a Saturday wedding, and the bride's mother had written in green ink that it must be ready for the morning train to Harrogate. So we worked by the paraffin lamp with the sequins from the other order scattered across the table like spilt rice. Ada pricked her dots in threes and I sewed the rings, one circle inside another, each one a little smaller than the last, until the heart was a knot of grey that looked more like a fingerprint than a valentine.

Near three in the morning the smallest ring would not close. I unpicked it twice and it still left a gap no wider than a hair. Ada took the pin from my hand, pushed it into the cushion beside the others and said that every heart needed one place a person could not see the edge of, or it would only be a shape. I did not argue. We wrapped the garter in tissue at first light, and when I looked back from the door the pins were still standing in the cushion in a ring, a small heart of their own, waiting for whoever came in next.
