The lorry came through Sallow Gate at twenty to four, its manifest stamped for pine flooring from a yard outside Gdansk, and I should have waved it on. Instead I shone my torch past the driver's shoulder and found a grey dog sitting upright on the passenger seat, watching me the way a magistrate watches a man he already knows is guilty.

Its ears lay narrow and flat, and its eyes had a half-closed hardness I had only seen once before, on my uncle's wolfhound, the year before he sold it. The driver said the dog was called Ash and had never once been out of the cab. I asked him to step down. He did so slowly, palms open, and while I walked the trailer with my clipboard the dog didn't move at all, not even when the rain began drumming on the roof.

The paperwork was perfect. The seal numbers matched and the weight was right to the kilo. Then, behind a tarpaulin at the back, I found a crate with air holes and no label, and inside it a pale cat, thin as a length of rope, blinking at my light. I radioed it in and nobody answered for a long minute. When I turned back to the cab, Ash had lifted its whole head to face me, level and patient, as if it had been waiting for me to choose the right thing.

I let the lorry go. I logged the cat, rang the duty line, and wrote Ash's name in the margin beside a tick. Later, from the car park, I saw the dog in the side mirror, still watching the gate close behind them, and I understood that I had been the one being counted.
