Dagger with eye and anatomical heart design

Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing on paper shows a dagger with an ornate, mandala-like hilt that frames a detailed eye at its centre, surrounded by small stars and crescent moons. The blade carries an anatomical heart with fine hatched linework and shading, set against radiating sunburst lines. The drawing is entirely in black ink and grey shading on a pale background, with no colour.

Hermon had hammered the blade three times and cooled it three times, and still the bronze eye refused to sit true in the hilt. The priest's boy stood at the forge door counting the sparks. "Master says the moon must be on the guard by dusk," he said, and Hermon swore at him in the Egyptian way his mother had taught him, which was the only prayer he trusted.

The eye had been his own idea. A dagger for a physician, the commission said, to open the sick and let out what the sun had shut in. So he made the hilt a mandala of curled acanthus, crescent moons ticking down its sides, and at its centre a single lidded eye, because a surgeon should not cut blind. The heart he would leave to the tip, chased in fine lines the way the old anatomist had drawn it for him on a wax tablet: chambers, vessels, the small proud muscle at its root.

At dusk he laid the knife on the anvil and scattered the sunburst with a point of flint, one ray for every stroke of the hammer he had not taken. The boy asked whether it would cut. "It cuts only what it is made to see," Hermon said, and he wiped the eye clean with his sleeve so it could look at the room.
