Snow had sealed the lane to Hallow Scar for three days, and Nell Carrick had counted the tins in the cellar twice before she admitted the flour would not last the week. The only guest left was a tinker called Abel Frew, who sat by the range with his boots steaming and watched her the way men watch a dog they suspect has swallowed a key.

On the fourth night he set something on the table between the salt and the vinegar. It was a crab painted on a round tin tray no wider than a dinner plate, its shell ringed with dotted bands and a red star at the centre, its claws raised like scissors that had decided to be courteous. "My mother's," he said. "She painted them for the boats at Seaton, before the boats stopped coming. Every one had a star in the middle so the men could find their way home by it. Daft, she was, but she believed it."

Nell turned the tray in the lamplight. The teal had dulled and the yellow had gone the colour of old butter, but the dark outline still held every leg in place. "Then why carry it about?" she asked.

He looked at the window, where the snow had piled up to the sill. "Nobody ever let me sit at a table with it before," he said, and reached for the bread she had not yet decided to give him.

The plough came through on the Thursday. Before Abel left, Nell hung the tray above the door with a loop of baling twine, its star turned towards the lane, so that whoever came up it out of the white would know which way the inn was.
