Cubist faces and eyes on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows fragmented, angular faces built from overlapping geometric planes, with several stylised eyes repeated across the design. Bold black outlines and flat areas of red, blue, yellow and grey give it a graphic, Picasso-inspired look. The design wraps around the upper arm and fills most of the frame against bare skin.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the crisp packet. Nobody on the eleventh floor of Calder House ever saw a face whole. That was the trouble with the block. You came out of the lift and a man was looking at you from the side, his nose going one way and his mouth another, and the woman by the bins had her eyes set in her cheek.

Ivo Marchetti came up from the south in the spring of nineteen seventy-one with two tins of paint and a sketchbook full of women's heads cut into planes. The council gave him the stairwell wall for a fortnight because nobody else wanted it. He painted black first, thick as tar, then the yellows and reds, then eyes. Dozens of eyes. Some in profile, some staring straight out, one sitting sideways on a jaw like a dropped coin.

The old men said it was rubbish. The children said the eyes followed them down the stairs. Mrs Okafor on six said she had never once felt so watched, and she meant it kindly, because for the first time someone had arranged the whole building to keep an eye out for her.

Then the council sent a painter in grey overalls and the stairwell went magnolia in a single afternoon. Ivo moved away. But on wet mornings, if you stand on the landing where the light comes in sideways, you can still see the edge of a blue eye pushing through the cream, looking down at the car park as if it has only just noticed you.
