Ornate cross on the lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph from behind of a woman's lower back, with a cross tattoo at the centre. The cross has a decorative filigree outline with scrolled, leaf-like shapes at each arm end and along the shaft. It is shaded in black and grey, with soft tonal shading inside the ornament, and sits centrally against bare skin above jeans and below a purple top.

Sit closer, the rain is only pretending to stop. You want the cross, then you'll have it the way my grandmother gave it to me, under the awning at Wexley market with the gutters running like a river. There was a smith called Abel Thorne who worked brass wire so fine it could be pulled through a hair. He could make a cross that looked like frost had grown on it overnight, every arm curled over at the ends like a fern just unrolling.

He made one for the bishop's daughter, who wouldn't wear it. She said it was too busy, too much fuss for a plain God. Abel said a plain God had never needed a smith. So he took it back, and he sat with it through a wet winter, and every evening he picked off one scroll and bent it again, until the cross had no two arms alike.

On the last market day of March, a stranger came under the awning with a coat of rain on her shoulders and asked what the price was. Abel told her it was already paid for, in the hours he had spent. She laughed and left a coin on the trestle anyway, and the coin was warm, and when Abel looked up she had gone, and the cross lay there bright as a new moon.

That is the whole of it. Put your coins in the hat, and mind the puddle by the step.
