Cross and scripture reference on the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph taken from behind shows a person's neck, with dark hair pulled to the side and a grey textured top at the collar. A simple solid black cross sits at the centre of the neck, with the text 2Cor 12:9 printed in a small typewriter-style font running vertically beside its lower stem. The image is greyscale, with clean contrast between the dark ink and the pale skin.

Dear Maud,

The Remington has finally stopped sticking on the letter r, though it still drops its capital F and I have given up apologising for it to Mr Ashby. Half the parish wanted notices typed this week: the banns, the harvest list, the names for the memorial board. My fingers ached by Tuesday.
Then the telegram came for the Hallet boy, and the vicar asked me to set down his reply in full. He had written it by hand on the back of an old bulletin, underlining one line in pencil: My grace is sufficient for thee, for my strength is made perfect in weakness. He wanted it printed on a card above a small black cross. I told him that was a cruel thing to put in front of a mother.
He said Saint Paul wrote those words from his own failing, not from comfort, and that they were meant for whoever had nothing left to hold. So I typed it, carefully, one key at a time, and set the card in the envelope myself. I did not let the ribbon slip once, though my hand was shaking.
Mrs Hallet came by on Thursday to thank me. She said little. She pressed the card flat on my counter with one thumb, the way you smooth a bandage, and told me she had read it aloud at night until the words sounded like her own voice. I have been thinking since that a machine cannot feel a thing, but it can carry something true if the hand on it stays steady. Write soon. Your loving sister, Edith.
