Small black cross on a hip
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A small, upright black cross sits on the side of the hip, angled slightly toward the top of the thigh. The lines are thin and even, with no shading, and the cross is set against warm, lightly filtered skin. The frame is close and tight, with white underwear at the top edge and a blurred room visible at the right.

Dear Tom,

The pass closed on Tuesday and it has not opened since. Mr Hobday's coach is in the yard under a hump of snow, and there are nine of us in the back parlour, including a curate who has read the same page of Lamentations four times since supper. Mother has the big kettle on the hob and says we will not run out of tea before March, though she has been counting the spoons.
Yesterday I went out with the spade to clear a path to the privy and found, on the gatepost by the stable, a small upright cross scratched into the wood with a nail. The edges are still pale. I asked Father and he said the carter Hal Greaves must have done it on his way through before the weather turned, the way drovers mark a house that will feed a man for nothing. He said it as if it were a joke, but he went out and looked at it twice before he came in.
Last night the wind came round and took the painted sign off the lintel, so now the only thing saying the Crown is the cross. The curate has taken to standing beside it at dusk with his hat in his hands, as though it were a notice for a service.
I think I shall keep the cross when the snow goes. Mother says the wood will weather in a season and the mark will be gone. I told her I would rather it weathered than was painted over, and she laughed for the first time since Christmas.
Write soon, if the post still runs.
Your loving sister, Edith
