Dotwork elephant with geometric mandala on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large elephant head in profile, with its trunk raised high to the right, is rendered in stippled dotwork shading that gives the skin and ear texture. A fine dotted geometric mandala sits behind the head and spreads across the arm. The piece is entirely black ink and grey tones, with the design filling most of the frame.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the pigeon, he's waited for this as long as I have. You want the one about the elephant who walked out of the Carlisle Street yard the night the rain stopped. Everyone tells it wrong, so listen.

She was called Dunya. She had been brought over in a crate with a painted sun on the side, and for thirty years she stood in a yard full of ropes and was never once let look up. The night the gates swung open by mistake, she didn't run. She walked, slow, the way you walk when you have finally been told you may. Down past the chip shop, past the locked church with its door full of posters, out onto the great empty roundabout where the city's lamps stand in rings like the spokes of a wheel.

Now here's the bit the newspapers left out. Each lamp she passed, she stopped beneath and lifted her trunk to it, high, the way you'd reach for a shelf you know is there. Some say she was smelling the warmth. My mother said she was drawing. Every lamp a dot, every dot a line to the next, and by the time the sun came up over the bus depot the whole town was tangled in a pattern nobody had planned.

They found her at dawn, standing still in the middle of the roundabout, trunk raised to the last lamp, which had gone out. And do you know what she did? She waited. She waited until the bulb flickered on again, because somebody had come along to fix it with a ladder and a bad temper, and then she curled her trunk the way you'd tip a hat to a friend. That is the whole story. Now, who wants a second round before the pigeon finishes the crisps?
