Ornate elephant on a shoulder blade
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised elephant with a raised trunk and patterned body fills the frame, its skin decorated with dotted, paisley-like ornaments and scrollwork. The linework is bold and the shading is in soft greys, with white highlights left in the skin areas. The tattoo sits to one side of the frame, with the subject's long, wavy dark hair falling over the opposite shoulder.

The paint tin is already open when you reach the lock at Hythe Cut, and the dog has got into the coal bunker again. Your grandmother's brushes sit in a jam jar, stiff with old enamel. The boat is called Marigold Ruth, and the roses and castles on her cabin side have faded to the colour of weak tea. You have never painted an elephant, and nobody on the cut has asked you to.

Hal at the chandlery said painted elephants were for bargees who had been to India, and you had not, so you should copy one from a book. You do not copy. You sit on the cabin step with a pencil and draw it the way the lock keeper's wife described it, trunk lifted as if testing the weather, its body covered in paisley and dots like a shawl stitched on one bead at a time. Every ornament takes as long as it takes.
By the third evening the gates are shut, the water is still, and you have found a rhythm: a dot, a curl, a dot. Tom from the next boat comes along the towpath with two mugs of tea and stands watching. "It's a proper animal," he says. "Looks like it's carrying the whole river on its back." You tell him it's only enamel. Then you notice he is right in the only way that counts, because the ornaments have stopped being decoration and started to look like a route.
When the varnish sets you untie Marigold Ruth and let the current take her out past the moored boats. The lock keeper's wife waves from the gate. Behind you the elephant walks along the cabin side with its trunk raised, catching the morning sun on every white dot you left unpainted.
