Ornate feather tattoo behind the ear

Neo-trad · Neck · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised feather with curling scrolls and swirls, placed on the neck just behind the ear. Heavy black outlines define the shapes, with the inner feather filled in yellow, orange and red and small decorative details in the lower section. The design is shown close up against the skin, with the ear and a pearl stud earring visible beside it.

She kept the long primaries for herself and gave me the rest to practise on. Every scroll on the ring began as a feather, she said, and every feather began as something that had been allowed to fly.

The council had no use for feathers, which was why they wanted me. Twelve years later they commissioned an illuminated charter to hang in the north airlock, the first thing new arrivals would see, and I was the only scribe left who still mixed her inks from madder root and marigold petal grown on the hydroponic decks. I drew the feather first, heavy black edges, the vanes filled with a dusk of yellow sliding into orange and then red at the quill. Then I gave it scrolls, because a feather with no curl in it is only a stick that remembers being a bird.

The charter took me until midwinter. When I hung it, the airlock fans pulled through the gap under the door and every curl along the lower edge lifted a fraction, the way a chime answers a draught. Nobody on the council noticed. Old Ysolde from the seed vaults stood beneath it with her palm flat against the wall and told me it was the first thing she had seen in forty years that looked like it wanted to leave.
