Seahorse and bubbles on the ear
Other · Colour · Photo
A purple and lilac seahorse with a curled tail and frilled fins swims upwards across the inner part of the ear, with small bubbles rising above and beside it. The outlines are dark and the shading uses soft gradients of violet and pink. The tattoo sits centrally on the frame of the photograph against a plain, softly lit background of skin and hair.

Sit closer, the lamp is only good for one of us. Yes, you, with the cold hands. The night this happened the gulls had gone quiet over Gallows Wharf and the whole city smelled of tar and frying onions, and a clockmaker called Ebenezer Dunn was out past the last lamp with a bucket he had no business carrying.

He had been sent to fetch seawater for his sister's tank, which sat in the back room of a pawnshop on Tallow Street, because the seahorses she bred there would die in tap water. Fat little things, she called them, with faces like old horses that had seen too much. The bucket was heavy and he took the slipway steps one at a time, counting them the way his father had taught him to count the hours.
At the bottom a seahorse was waiting in the shallows, upright and violet in the lamplight, its frilled fins lifting as though it were listening. It did not flinch when he set the bucket down. It rose, and where it rose the water beaded with bubbles, a string of them climbing past the lamp post and up toward the chapel window where, every night for years, someone had left a candle burning for a sailor who never came home.
Ebenezer followed the bubbles up the steps. He never filled the bucket. He came back the next morning with it still empty, and his sister swears the seahorses at the pawnshop turned to the wall whenever he walked through the door.
