Black tribal tattoo behind the ear
Blackwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a bold black tribal design behind an ear, extending from the hairline down onto the neck. The design uses solid black ink with sharp triangular points, swirling curves and a row of small serrated shapes. The ear and dark hair frame the tattoo against warm skin, and a white beaded earring with a gold hook hangs in the foreground.

Hana had been scraping lichen from the old paddle for three evenings before she noticed the pattern was not carved so much as grown. The wood had come over in a tea chest from the far side of the world, wrapped in sailcloth nobody in Penhallow could read, and it had sat in the potting shed ever since, smelling of tar and cut grass. Her grandfather called the marks a sea-sign. Her aunt said they were only decoration for men who wanted to look fierce.

The row of small serrated shapes ran along one edge like the teeth of a saw, and the sharp triangles fanned out wherever the swirls curled back on themselves. Hana traced them with a fingernail and thought of the bracken at the bottom of the orchard, which unrolled each spring from a tight fist into something almost too big for the hedge. She carried the paddle out into the drizzle and held it beside the fern bed, turning it until the largest curl sat over a frond that had only just begun to open.
Her aunt came out with two mugs and said nothing for a long time. Then she sat on the wall and said, "Your grandfather planted those ferns the year he came home." Hana looked from the wood to the bed and understood that the spirals were not warnings at all. They were the shape the ferns made while they were still closed, a promise of what they would become if someone was patient enough to wait.
She oiled the wood that night, and in the morning she dug a hole against the south wall and set a rooted crown of fern into the soil. The paddle leaned against the warm stones to dry, its black lines the colour of the shadows under the leaves.
