Bear face with mandala and clouds
Geometric · Colour · Flash
A bear face with a dark navy head, pale muzzle and white-rimmed eyes sits at the centre of the design, with a large mandala above the forehead. Cloud-like scrolls and ornamental flourishes surround the face in a symmetrical frame. The linework is crisp and uses hatching and solid fills in navy and muted tan on a plain white background.

The bus had been stopped at the shrine for forty minutes when the old man in the grey coat climbed back aboard with a scroll under his arm. Nobody asked what it was. Beyond the windows the road ran straight into the heat haze, the sand on either side the colour of weak tea, and the mountains ahead had been swallowed by cloud that did not look like rain.

He unrolled the scroll across his knees because I was the only one still looking. A bear's head filled it, navy as a night sky, with a pale muzzle and two white eyes that did not blink at me. Above its brow sat a flower made of a hundred small circles, and around the whole thing the cloud shapes curled like smoke that had decided to hold still. "The guardian of the crossing," he said. "It watches the road so the road does not watch the travellers."
I asked what became of travellers who were watched. He smiled and said they arrived.
Then the bus pulled out and the dust rose behind us, and I saw the bear again, painted high on the rock wall above the old well, face turned toward the highway with the same hard eyes. The paint had faded to tan and navy, but the clouds were still crisp. I thought of the scroll folded inside his coat. A hundred kilometres further on, the bus stopped for water, and he was not in his seat.
