Ornate key and flower on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large ornate key runs vertically, with a scrolled bow in purple and yellow topped by a teal finial, and a shaft decorated with teal and red bands. A peach flower with green leaves and small red and teal dots sits at the lower left of the shaft, and the bit of the key has stepped detailing. Bold dark outlines and soft shading give the piece a classic look, with colour ink dominating against pale skin and a dark background.

Our shelf has held a great many keys, but few with a bow like this one, scrolled in brass gone purple at the edges, with a teal bead on top that catches the light from the ticket hall. Someone had pressed a peach-coloured flower into the wire, flattened and faded to the colour of weak tea.

Mr Bashir, who has worked the lost property desk since the Beeching years and believes everything valuable ends up in Leeds, said the key was for a left luggage locker, and I was foolish enough to believe him. The locker at platform six held only a single boot and a tin of barley sugar. The key opened nothing else I tried, though I went through every lock in the office, including the old safe with its 1961 combination chalked inside the door.
I am writing because the card tied to the wire bore your name and a Tuesday date, and because the stepped teeth are unusual enough that I suspect the key belongs to a box rather than a house. If you tell me which station you last used, I will look again. The flower, I think, was meant for whoever you were meeting off that train.
Yours faithfully, Margaret Holt, Lost Property, Hexham Station.
