Ornate key with dotted rays on chest
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of an ornate key with a heart-shaped bow sits centrally on the chest, with the hands of the wearer resting either side. Fine dotted lines and small diamond shapes radiate outward from the key, suggesting a compass-like pattern. The shading is smooth and the linework is crisp against the pale skin, with the dark background framing the design.

The bell in the tower of Halloran has not rung since the winter the Duke lost his seal, so the whole city has learned to listen for smaller sounds. You hear the locksmith's file in the morning, the rasp of brass on the steps of the Lantern Gate, and you know the day has started properly. You are seventeen and the only person in Halloran who can read a ward by touch.

Your master has left you the old key, the one with the heart-shaped bow that he would never let anyone copy. It sits cold in your palm, its teeth as fine as eyelashes. Someone long dead has pricked a ring of dots around its shank, and from those dots four thin arms reach out, each ending in a small black diamond, pointing north, south, east and west, as if the key were meant to find its own way home before it opened anything.
The Duke's clerk arrives before noon, sweating in his velvet, demanding that the treasury lock be recut so the guild can be paid in gold instead of promises. You tell him the key does not open locks. It opens directions. He laughs at you, so you walk him to the chapel instead, where the ledgers are kept behind a door nobody has tried in forty years. You set the key, follow the dots with your thumb the way your master taught you, and feel the ward give way like a breath let out.
Inside there is no gold, only shelves of debts. The Duke's own grandfather borrowed from the locksmiths' guild, and the guild has never once asked for the money back. The clerk reads the page twice and goes pale. You lock the door again, but you leave the key in its keyhole, turned halfway, so that whoever comes next will have to find their own way through.
