Black rose and dotted lines on an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a tattoo on the ankle and top of the foot, showing a large rose with layered petals, a smaller rosebud, and leaves. Dotted lines curve down from the flower and end in small droplet shapes. The shading is soft and grey-toned against pale skin, and the composition is angled from the side with the design at the centre.

The rose bushes behind Brindle House had been salt-burnt since March, and Mother said the only sensible thing to do with a burnt rose was cut it low and wait. I did the cutting that Saturday in my oldest boots, while the lodgers argued over the bathroom rota in the kitchen behind me.

The one who came down the garden path that afternoon was a Miss Coyle, who had taken the attic room for a fortnight and paid in ten-shilling notes folded into neat squares. She watched me from the bench by the wall. 'You're leaving the buds,' she said. 'Only the ones going over,' I told her. 'The rest need the sun.'

On her last evening she gave me a pencil drawing on the back of a tide table: a rose sitting low, a bud tucked beneath it, and a line of dots running off the edge of the paper like footprints down wet sand. At the end of each line she had drawn a single drop. 'Count one every time you come up from the shingle,' she said. I laughed, and she didn't.

The train left at seven. Mother kept the notes for the coal, and I kept the tide table in my apron pocket, where it went soft from washing. Some mornings the sea draws back so far I can walk out to the rocks and count the drops in the pools, three, five, nine. I have never once reached the end of them before the water turns.
