Ornate knotwork heart on the wrist
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is shown palm up, with an ornamental tattoo on the inner wrist. The design is an interlaced, heart-like monogram with looping knotwork lines and a shaded, raised appearance. The image has a dark teal, sepia-toned filter, and the ink reads as black and grey against the skin.

The wire had to go round nine times before it met itself, and Hannah Dobbs had been at the bench since before the bells for Prime, bending it to the pattern Master Ruddock had drawn on a slate and wiped clean twice. Nine loops over, one under, the old interlace the Welsh smiths called the endless knot. Her fingers were raw from the pliers. The lamp smoked. Ruddock had not come down the stairs in an hour.

When the wire closed into the heart's lower point she bent it back to check, and found a gap the width of a barleycorn where the two ends should have kissed. She turned it under the glass. Nothing. She counted the crossings again with a pin, the way her mother had counted stitches on a sampler, and every count came to eight where it should have been seven.
Ruddock came down at last, wiping his palms on his apron. He took the ring without speaking, held it to the window where the frost was thawing, and laughed low, the way he laughed at the church bell when it was out of tune. 'You have made it a heart,' he said. 'The gap is the heart. Sit down, girl, and see how the wire has gone round the lovers instead of through them.'
She looked. The two lines did not join. They wound past each other and turned back, one stroke of silver holding the other in place. Hannah took up the file, cut away nothing, and set the ring on the bench beside the slate, where it caught the lamp and kept it.
