Black swirl flourish on a wrist
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black abstract flourish with curled ends and a tapering tail sits on the inner wrist and lower forearm of a light-skinned arm. The solid, smooth linework has even weight throughout, with no shading or fine detail. The image is shot in black and white against a dark background, which keeps the focus on the shape.

The fair pulled out of Heddon Common with the lamps still unlit, and Nell rode on the tailboard of the Pearl wagon with a pot of gold size balanced between her knees. Old Tobiah had died of a chest cold in March, and Mr Marrable had handed his brushes to whoever could hold a straight line. Nell could not hold one. Her curls came out fat and lopsided, like sausages that had given up.

Her first real attempt came on the last night at Wexcombe, under a sky the colour of dishwater. The swing boats were still turning. She had been told to lettering the wagon's name along the panel, but the name was already there, and the brush wanted to do something else. It drew a tail first, thin as a hair, then turned it back on itself into a curl, then another, the way the wire-walker's silk fell from the top of the big top on the nights she let it drift.
Mrs Okafor, who ran the coconut shy and had watched Tobiah paint for thirty years, came round the back of the wagon with a cup of tea and stopped. 'That's his stroke,' she said, though it wasn't quite. 'He always let the tail go before he meant to.' Nell kept her eyes on the paint so she would not have to answer.
They pulled out before dawn. In the grey light, when Nell looked back down the lane, the wet black edge of the flourish caught the first sun, and the curls seemed to lift off the wood, the tail unwinding over the gate posts and into the hedgerow where no brush had ever been. She did not wave. She just watched the ribbon keep going.
