Ornate lace-style design on crossed feet

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are crossed in front of green leaves and pink flowers. Dark, ornate patterns of swirls, dots and scalloped lace cover the toes, the tops of the feet and the ankles, and they look more like henna than tattooed ink. The fine, even linework is set against warm skin in soft natural daylight.

The paste had thickened in the cone while Auntie Rekha shouted from the kitchen that the lime needed squeezing, so Nisha pressed it against the back of her hand, watched a bead gather at the nib, and wiped it away on a tea towel. Her grandmother had taught her to start at the toes and work up, never the other way, because the eye wanted to travel up a pattern and not drop down it. Outside the marquee, the bunting snapped in the wind off the car park.

Anjali sat on a cushion on the back step with her legs stretched out across a folded sari, saying nothing while Nisha drew. The first lines were always the hardest: a fine scalloped border like the edge of a good tablecloth, then the little paisley teardrops that curled inward like something listening. Nisha placed the dots last, one at a time, the way her grandmother had placed full stops in letters home. Anjali's cousins kept wandering over to watch and being sent away again.

By four o'clock the paste had gone from green to a dull, dried brown, and the lace stood out dark against the skin. Nisha had to lift her own hand to shade her eyes when the sun came low over the hedge, and she thought of her own wedding, twelve years gone, when she had sat on the same step and woken the next morning to find her designs had darkened overnight into something almost black. Anjali flexed her toes slowly to test the crackle of the dried paste. "Don't move yet," Nisha said, and for once her cousin did as she was told.
