Ornate mehndi-style design on upper arm
Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical ornamental design sits on the upper arm and shoulder, centred on a heart-shaped motif topped with leaves and a crown-like arch. Below it, a diamond lattice panel and scalloped paisley-style borders lead down to a row of dangling dots and a small rosette. The fine dark lines are rendered in a single ink tone, with no shading, and the design is set against warm skin and a cream knitted top in soft sunlight.

The henna had to rest overnight, Shanti said, or the stain would come out pale and tired, so Dorothy Ferrier sat with the tin basin wedged between her knees while the Constance Merrow rolled through the Indian Ocean swell. Eleven weeks out of Bombay and the paste still smelled green through three gales, and the second mate had stopped complaining about it on the fourth.

Shanti's pattern lived in her head, not on paper. Dorothy drew it from memory onto the back of her brother's chart of the Agulhas bank, the only sheet aboard nobody else had claimed. A heart with a curl at its top. A crown arch over it, pointed like the gateway of a temple. Beneath that, a lattice of diamonds that Shanti had said was the grille of her mother's window in Malabar, and a fringe of scalloped paisley leading down to a row of dots that, Shanti swore, were the drops of the monsoon falling off the eaves.
Mate Harrow found her at the chart table in the grey dawn. He squinted at the ink running off the edge of the Cape and asked what the heart was meant to be. Dorothy said it was a house with the roof kept on. He said that was nonsense for a navigator's map, and she agreed, and went on drawing the last dot, which she placed at the very bottom of the sheet where the soundings ran out.
At Falmouth the chart went into her brother's trunk unfolded. The henna had long since faded from the paper, leaving only a pale brown shadow of the lattice, and the dots lay in a neat line along the edge like depth readings taken in the dark, true to nothing but the water they had passed over.
