Dreamcatcher and feather side piece
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher with hanging feathers sits at the centre of a long black linework design that winds down the side of the body. Surrounding it are diamond-shaped geometric motifs, beaded strands, swirling lines and a small butterfly-like shape near the top. The design is in black ink only, with fine, even lines against blurred skin and a soft background.

The third night of the Michaelmas fair, and the wind off the Dunmore fields had got under the canvas again. Hettie Parr sat on an upturned crate behind the ribbon stall, threading black glass beads onto cord while her brother Abel counted coins for the second time that evening. The lamps swung on their wires above them, throwing diamonds of light across the trodden grass.

Abel sold the dreamcatchers. Hettie made them, bending willow into hoops, lacing each with a web of knots and hanging the feathers from cord that she had dyed in tea. She called the pattern the ladder of nights. A ticket-taker's wife bought one for her son and asked whether it really caught bad dreams. Abel said yes, for a penny more, and Hettie kept her eyes on her beads.
What she never told anyone was that she tied the web loose on purpose. The bad dreams slipped through the gaps and fell away into the grass, and the good ones stayed tangled in the knots where a child could find them in the morning. If customers knew, nothing would sell, so she kept it to herself.
On the last night the caravan lamp went out early, and in the dark Hettie found a hoop left on the wagon step with its feathers bent flat. Her own knots were on it, tied the way their mother had taught her, loose at the centre. At first light the field was bare. She tied that hoop to the last fence post at the edge of the meadow, where the feathers lifted and turned as the lorries pulled away, and she walked after them with her hands empty for once.
