Ornate owl head on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised owl face with large round eyes, a pointed beak and patterned detailing across the head and feathers. The linework and shading are built from fine dots and small decorative marks, with a solid dark area along the top of the head. The design is in black ink only, shown on a forearm against a dark grey pavement and dark clothing.

Nobody had fed the owl since the Tuesday the council men came with their paperwork, so I took it on myself to climb the rigging at dusk with a dead vole in my coat pocket. Mr Abernethy had named her Ptolemy for the poster, though the bird never answered to anything but the rattle of the feed tin. For forty years she had sat on the lighting bar above the centre ring, watching the Great Vellino Circus go through its turns, and now the big top was folded in a lorry yard outside Boston and only two bulbs burned over the sawdust.

The company left quietly. Vellino took the last train to Leeds with his trombone case and a suitcase of letters, and the flyers loaded their own rigging into the van without a word. Only the owl stayed, and only the owl would look me straight in the eye. Her face is a clockwork thing: round eyes ringed with concentric rows of tiny dots, a beak like a folded note, feathers printed in small marks like the stitching on the old ringmaster's waistcoat.

On the last night I found her on the empty chair where Vellino used to sit to count the takings, turned to face the door as if she expected an audience. I set the vole on the arm of the chair. She didn't touch it. She blinked, slowly, once, the way the painted circle on the banner seems to blink when the light catches it. Then she lifted into the dark above the ring, and I stood in the sawdust holding the empty feed tin, understanding that the show had finished and nobody had thought to tell the owl.
