Fawn tattoo on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of a young deer, shown mid-stride with its head lowered and ears raised, with dotted markings along its back. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, so the figure reads as a simple silhouette with sparse interior detail. It sits on the inner forearm of a light-skinned arm, with the wrist visible at the lower edge against a white cloth backdrop.

The committee had voted for the Crown over the Methodist hall, so by half past seven the back room smelled of warm sausage rolls and somebody's cheap cider. Dorothy Pask stood beside the raffle table with a shoebox of old photographs and watched the door. Gordon Fry was late, which was no surprise, and she was the only one left who needed him to remember the fawn.

It had been the spring of 1979, the summer before the lane flooded. She and Gordon had found it folded into the hawthorn behind the bus shelter, its legs tucked wrong and its coat freckled as if someone had flicked a paintbrush at it. They carried it back to school in Gordon's PE bag, which Mr Hollis discovered at the second bell with a noise none of them forgot. By the time the warden's Land Rover came up the drive, the fawn was on its feet, stepping long-legged across the playing field, head low and ears pricked, as if it had only stopped to rest.
Gordon arrived at nine with a carrier bag and a bald patch he apologised for. He looked at the photograph Dorothy had kept, the one from the Gazette with two grubby children grinning either side of nothing much, and he laughed until he had to sit down. 'I never wondered if it lived,' he said. 'I wondered if we'd get the bag back.'
Dorothy pinned the picture to the noticeboard between the bingo rota and a lost cardigan. Across the room, someone's phone torch swept the wall and caught the pale outline of the old photograph, and for a moment the deer looked as though it was still leaping away from them, out through the door and into the car park before anyone could stop it.
