Geometric owl design

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A front-facing owl drawn in black ink on a white background, with large horns, a symmetrical face and a body built from triangles and straight intersecting lines. The face and feathers are filled with fine hatching, stippling and parallel stripes, while the central chest panel is left open with only thin lines. The composition is centred and fills the frame, with no shading or colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ines had laid out the walled garden three times before the owl agreed to sit where she wanted it. The first plan, pegged out in March with knotted string and a borrowed set square, put the rhubarb on the wrong side of the path. The second put the bean poles in a shadow the wall threw until noon. By the third attempt she had learned to trust the lines more than her own eye, and the lines kept meeting at the same point in the middle of the lawn, a spot where nothing would grow.

The owl came down from the chestnut each evening at the hour she finished her tea. It landed on the gatepost and watched her fold the string, its horns sharp against the sky, its face as symmetrical as a plan drawn with a rule. Her father had always said owls were only ever counting something. She had taken it for a figure of speech until she noticed that its feathers were laid out in the same triangles she was chalking on the path.

On the last evening of the dig she went down through the clay with a trowel, then a spade, and at two feet the blade rang on old brick. It was a well, capped and forgotten, sitting exactly where the lines had crossed. The owl lifted off the post without a sound and settled on the rim of it, as if it had been waiting for someone to finally do the sums.
