Ornate skull and crossed skeleton keys

Black and grey · Flash

A detailed skull built from dense scrollwork and filigree, with a keyhole in place of the nose and a lower jaw of looped ornament. Two skeleton keys cross beneath it, with fine stippled shading on the skull and crisp, even outlines on the keys. The design is shown in silvery greys against a plain black background, centred in the frame.

The ring hangs from a nail above the bread locker, and you are the only one aboard allowed to lift it down. Seven keys, iron gone dark with galley smoke, each cut for a lock you have never seen. The mate calls you the quartermaster's dog. You let him. Nobody on the Mercy Wren goes hungry while you hold the keys to the flour, the salt pork and the rum cask with the brass plate.

Bosun Haskett wants the rum tonight. It is the middle watch and the sea is grey as slate, and he leans in the hatchway with a grin that has no good in it. You tell him the cask is locked and the master keeps the only other key in his cabin. He says a cook who keeps two keys is a cook who keeps secrets. You hand him a ladle instead and say the soup needs stirring, because a pot on the boil buys more time than any lie.

When he has gone, you take the ring down and turn the smallest key over in your palm. Its bow is a little looped crown, its bit cut like a row of teeth. Old Tobin, who sailed with the first crew, used to say a ship's keys were the only honest ornaments she carried, since every one opened something a man would have to answer for. You slide it into the rum cask and it turns without a sound.

You pour the rum slowly over the side, one bucket at a time, and fill the cask with sea water from the bucket you have kept for the scrubbing. In the morning Haskett comes sniffing for his drink. You hand him the key with a bland face and watch him heft the cask, feel it slop like the ocean it came from, and swear at the master's stingy measures.
