Ornate sugar skull tattoo on a limb
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large sugar skull fills most of the frame, with its eye sockets, cheeks and forehead decorated by rosettes, paisley-like motifs and small florets. The linework is dark and even, with dotted shading inside the heart-shaped nose and along the teeth. The tattoo is in black ink only, and a partly visible coin sits at the top edge against plain skin and a dark blue background.

Dear Brother Tomás,

The almonds are ground and the sugar is boiled to a thread, so you may tell Father Anselm that the skulls are nearly ready for the vigil. Sister Inés has been pressing the paste into the clay moulds since before the bells, the way her grandmother taught her. She says the trick is to leave the faces wet long enough to take the patterns, but not so long that the rosettes slump into one another.
Yesterday the prioress found Sister Beatriz at the back bench with a pastry bag, piping tiny petals onto a skull that had already been finished. Beatriz said the dead were not particular and would not mind a second coat of lace. The prioress did not scold her. She only asked for a heart to be cut for the nose, the way the old ones made it, and Beatriz gave it a dot of white at the centre so the candlelight would catch it.
Here is the part I did not expect to write. The coin a pilgrim left on the sill last month, Beatriz has pressed into the wet sugar of the smallest skull as a keepsake for her mother, who died in March. It sits at the edge of the tray, half in and half out of the clay, and nobody has had the heart to move it.
Tomorrow we set them out in the chapel, one for each name we were given. I have written the names on slips of paper and tucked them under the jaws. I will bring you the last of the almond cake when the carts come through, if the roads are dry.
Your loving sister, Lucía
