Sugar skull with roses on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A sugar skull with black outlines, floral ornament and dark eye sockets sits on the upper leg, with pink and red roses trailing down beside it. The linework is bold and the skull is mostly black with patches of green, purple and pink in the flowers. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against soft, out of focus skin and a pale background.

Sit where the lamp can reach you, and stop picking at that sugar. Your great-grandmother never let a child touch an altar skull before the night of the dead, and I will not start now. Listen. The one she painted that year belonged to Teodoro Ruiz, who sold roses outside the bus station in San Lorenzo Vallejo for forty years and never once charged what they were worth.

His widow came to Inés with a sugar skull that had cracked in the mould and no money to buy another. Inés had three colours left in her box: soot black from the stove, a green she ground from crushed guava leaves, and a pink made from cochineal that she kept in a jar with a wooden lid. She drew the eye sockets deep and dark, ringed them with curling vines, and then, because the widow wanted something for the dead man's hands, she painted roses climbing up from the jaw.

On the night of the dead, the skull sat on the family step with a candle at its feet. In the morning the widow found the painted roses picked clean, every bud gone, though the paper flowers were untouched. Nobody in the village admitted to it, but Inés noticed the boy who swept the bus station had a pocket full of pink petals and a face that would not meet hers. Teodoro had given his roses away to anyone who looked tired, and perhaps that was what the village had finally learned to do for him.

Go on, eat your sugar now. Behind the bus station there is still a rose bush, and it has never once been pruned.
