Our Lady of Derby flash with roses and skull
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
A central madonna-style figure in a black cloak decorated with gold stars stands within a sunburst of gold rays, flanked by two cherubs and framed by a border of red roses. A winged banner reading OUR LADY OF DERBY and a skull sit at the base, with the figure's fishnet-clad legs visible beneath the cloak. Bold black outlines and flat areas of red, gold and cream give the piece a classic traditional look.

Gaffer wanted the Lady up on the side of the Palais before the Wakes fortnight, and I was the only signwriter left in the yard who could still mix a red that didn't go brown by Sunday. So I climbed the scaffold with a tin of gold leaf, a pot of size and a head full of the vicar's sermons, which were the only thing my mother had left me besides her opinions.

The cherubs were the trouble. Mrs Haskell at the chapel wanted them plump and modest, but the two lads who came down from the pit baths on Saturdays wanted to be painted as they were, all elbows and cheek, so I gave them a cheek apiece and a bit of mischief in the eye. The stars on the cloak took three days. The fishnets took one argument with the committee, which I won by pointing out that the Lady had been patron of a great many things nobody in that room had ever read about.
The skull went in last, down at the bottom under the banner, because Dennis Yates asked me to put it there the week his brother didn't come up from the Winding. He did not say why and I did not ask. I painted the bones white and left the eye sockets as black as I could get them, and I thought that would be the end of it.
Every morning now the 6.12 comes past the Palais and the sunburst catches the first of the light, and the driver lifts a hand off the wheel, which is more than the council ever did for any of us.
