Playing card queen illustration

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A stylised woman with blue hair and a crown sits at the centre, flanked by a king card on the left and a card design on the right. Bold black outlines, hatching and cross-hatching shade the figures and cards, with flat red, blue and yellow areas. The composition is tightly centred, with hands holding the cards and suit symbols at the lower edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had been falling since Tuesday, and by Thursday the road past Crowder's Gap had vanished, so we were all stuck at the Hollin Arms with nothing to do but play cards. Mrs Abney dealt badly on purpose so she could watch her son's face. The stranger who had come in off the moor with frost in his beard kept his hand fanned close to his chest, the way a man hides either a very good hand or none at all.

Nobody wanted the queen of hearts to come out, though we all knew she would. Every time she turned up, the oil lamp over the bar seemed to dip, and Mrs Abney would cross herself and reach for the gin. Old Pell swore she had been in that deck since his grandfather's day, a painted woman with a crown and a stare that followed you round the table. 'Hearts for the house,' the stranger said, laying down a jack and then the queen beside it, 'and diamonds for the debt.'

He had not been asking for money. He wanted the cellar key, and he wanted it with the look of a man who had walked three miles through drifts to get it. Mrs Abney's son slid it across without a word. The stranger pocketed it and went down the stairs, and we heard the barrels shift for a long time after.

By spring the thaw had run the moor clean, and the ledger behind the bar had one more name in it than before. The queen of hearts still hung on her nail above the till, her crown tilted a little, as if she had seen something she did not care to mention.
