Outline floral sleeve on upper arm
Japanese · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large sleeve of black outline flowers, mainly full peony or chrysanthemum blooms with swirling leaves and stems, wraps around the upper arm and reaches towards the shoulder. The linework is bold and uniform with no shading or fill, so the ink appears as line only on the skin. The arm is photographed close up against a plain door and siding background, with the design filling most of the frame.

You are halfway up the ladder in the Lower Orchard when the first Bramley drops past your ear and splits on the grass, and you decide the day has had enough of being gentle. The late August sun lies flat across the rows. Wasps drink at the windfalls. Mrs Pryce shouts over the hedge that the press is leaking again, and you tell her you heard her the first three times.

Your father kept his designs in a biscuit tin under the press. You find it on your knees in the shed, among seed packets and a snapped pair of secateurs, and prise the lid off. Inside are tracing papers gone brittle as onion skin. Every sheet holds the same thing: flowers drawn in one unbroken black line, peonies heaped like cabbages, chrysanthemums unfurling into curls, stems that loop back on themselves so you cannot tell where one ends and the next begins. He never coloured them. He said colour was for people who had not yet decided what they meant.
You lay one sheet on the bench and hold it to the window. The light comes through the thin paper and the lines go pale, nearly gone, and you realise the drawing is only what remains once everything else has been taken away. Outside, the pickers' van crunches up the lane. You fold the sheet into your back pocket, then unfold it again and trace the largest bloom with your finger, following the line round and round until your finger arrives back where it started, and the wasps keep drinking, and the tin stays open on the bench.
