The ovens were already ticking when I came down the back stairs, and Mrs Okafor was standing in the flour dust with her arms folded, glaring at the tray of bread I had left to prove too long. I told her it was the damp. She told me the damp had never once in forty years made a loaf sulk, and that I was to scrape the dough off the table before the lads came in from the van.

I scraped. Then I went out to the yard with my tea, because the sky over the car park had started going the colour of weak milk, and I wanted to see whether the rose bush Dad planted against the bin store had finally decided to flower. It had. One bloom, pushed out through the wire fence, so tight at the centre it looked like a fist someone had folded a letter into. The outer petals had peeled back and gone papery at the edges, the way the old ones always did, and a leaf on either side had been chewed into lace by something I never caught.
I stood there longer than the tea allowed. Mrs Okafor came out with the good scissors and said nothing, which from her was a speech. She cut the rose, put it in the jam jar on the windowsill by the proving cupboard, and went back in.
By six the bread was rising properly and the rose had dropped one petal onto the flour bin. I left it there. Nobody in that kitchen has ever dusted a shelf they didn't need to.
