Pencil sketch of a geometric rose with faceted petals, leaves and dotted chains ending in diamond drops, drawn as a tattoo design.

Geometric rose with dangling chains

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a rose built from angular, faceted petals with a shaded edge on each layer. Small leaves sit at the sides and base, and a dotted chain with beads and diamond-shaped drops hangs beneath the flower. The linework is dark and even, with light pencil shading, on plain paper placed on a wooden table.

The chain lay in a loose curve between two jars of brass screws, and he counted the drops twice before he accepted that one was missing altogether.

His father had taught him that a rose made of angles still opened, provided you counted the planes before you cut. Each petal was a stack of faceted layers, and the trick was the shaded underside, a sliver of darkness ground into the edge so the glass looked thicker than it was. He worked slowly through the afternoon, the wheel whining, the water running grey into the tray.

Ruth came in just before the lamps were lit, the last drop wrapped in a tea towel. It had hung nearest the window for forty years and gone cloudy at the point. She didn't want it matched, she said. She wanted it left the way the sea had left it. He held it up to the lamp, saw the chip and the bruise of colour inside, and decided he would not polish it back to new.

By dark the rose sat in its brass frame with the chain looped beneath it. When the gas came on, the drops threw small coins of light across the ceiling, and one of them, the cloudy one, pointed crookedly at the door where Ruth had gone out into the rain.
