Outlined piranha on a limb

Other · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon piranha swims side to side with an open mouth full of teeth and a spiral eye. The design is drawn in doubled outlines, one red and one blue, with no shading or fill, so the skin shows through the lines. The piece sits against a plain skin background with a dark tattoo edge partly visible at the lower left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Hobb's Orchard believed the pond held a piranha until the Pearmain windfalls started going missing from the far end of the rows, one bruised apple at a time, and then a whole wheelbarrow of Bramleys vanished in a single night. My grandad blamed the wasps. Gran blamed the Coombes boys. I blamed the fish, because I had seen it: a little red-and-blue thing with a mouth like a rat trap, drifting under the lily pads with one wide spiral eye that looked at me as if I owed it money.

Where it came from is a story for another summer. Dad had won it at the Michaelmas fair in a bag with a goldfish, and the goldfish had gone the way of goldfish. The piranha had simply grown.

Late August is the worst time for it, because the fruit drops and the wasps go mad and the water turns warm and brown. I took to carrying a broom handle down to the pond at dusk, the way other boys carry torches. Every evening the fish came up to see what I had brought, and every evening I offered it a windfall on the end of a stick. It snapped, shook the apple like a dog with a sock, and swam off in a double wobble of red and blue, as if it had been printed a shade out of register.

On the last evening of the month I stopped holding out the stick. The fish waited, eye turning, jaws opening and shutting like a rusty gate. I sat on the wall, bit into the last Bramley of the year and let the pond have its own way for once.
