Shark in top hat and tuxedo
Traditional · Colour · Photo
A grinning shark wearing a top hat and dark jacket with a red collar detail sits inside a circular rope border on a red background. Bold black outlines and solid fills give the figure a classic traditional finish, with some shading on the jacket. Colour ink dominates in grey, red and gold, with skin visible around the edges of the design.

Dear Walter,

The gentleman in number seven paid up again this morning, a fortnight in advance, counted out in silver florins that still smell of the harbour. I have told him twice that the back stairs are for the coal, and he has twice thanked me and carried on using them, which I suppose is what comes of a lodger who is all teeth and manners. He wears his top hat indoors. He does not take it off for grace, nor for the vicar, nor for me when I brought up his tea, and I have decided it is kinder not to ask why.
Last Thursday the fishmonger's boy came running up Gull Lane shouting that there was a tuxedo on the slipway with nobody in it. I went down with my umbrella. The jacket was folded very neatly on the bollard beside a pair of patent shoes, and the tide was coming in around them with an air of great patience. The gentleman was out past the breakwater, grinning at the sky and turning slowly in the swell like a man who has been told he is at a dance and intends to enjoy it.
He came in for supper, dripping, and asked whether the kippers were on. They were not. He ate a whole cod's head, then asked if I still had the good silver, the spoons from before the war. I said no. He said he had heard otherwise from the crabs. I have not decided whether to believe him, but I have started counting the spoons.
Yours in haste, Edie
