Whale with rope over a wave and red sun
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A dark grey whale with a rope looped around its head and body rises above a curling grey wave with green seaweed at its base. A solid red sun sits behind the whale. The bold black outlines and flat, solid fills are typical of traditional tattooing, and the two side-by-side photos show the same piece from slightly different angles.

Dolly Pym counted the rope coils for the third time that morning, because the number had changed overnight and nobody would admit to it. The Halloran & Sons Travelling Marvel had pitched on the flat above Morwenstow for nine seasons, and its finest attraction, Old Grey, had not been in the water for two of them. The whale was canvas and papier-mâché stretched over a barrel frame, hauled up the ramp each dusk by the strongman, Ezra, who insisted the rope was for show and nothing else.

The sun was the trouble. Red paint from the old Turkish dancer's poster had run into the sky board, and the bill-poster swore it would hold until the autumn fairs. Dolly knew better. Money had gone thin since the bank in Bude called in the loan on the big top, and the ringmaster had started talking about selling the wagons to a man in Plymouth who wanted scrap.
On the last night, a boy from the village wandered in with a crab in a jam jar and asked whether the whale had been real. Dolly said it had, once, and that a fisherman had roped it off a reef because it kept sinking his nets. "Did they let it go?" the boy asked. She looked at the green and grey wave painted behind it and said they had, though not on purpose.
Ezra unhooked the rope at first light and coiled it onto the wagon bed without a word. Dolly watched the frame go up the ramp for the last time, its painted flank scraping the canvas, and then she untied the red sun from its nails and folded it under her arm. She left the empty field to the gulls and walked down the cliff path toward the real water, where the waves were breaking grey and white.
