Stitch cartoon tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the blue cartoon character Stitch seen from a three-quarter back view, with large dark eyes, a pink patch on the back and a dark outline. The shading is soft and blended, giving a watercolour-like look across the blue body, with small dark blue patches and highlights left in the skin. The design is set centrally on the forearm against plain pale skin, with a grey top and dark wooden floor in the background.

The lift in Fenwick House had been dead since Tuesday, so when Nadia climbed the eleventh flight with a carrier bag of chips and a wet PE kit, she was not expecting company on the landing. Something blue sat on the concrete by the bin chute with its back to her, hunched as if the council had dropped it there. Two ears, drooping and wide as tea trays, rested against the wall. Across its rump was a patch the colour of bubblegum.

"You're in the way," she said, which was what her mum said to pigeons. It did not turn round. She sat on the step two yards off and ate a chip, then another, and the creature's ears twitched at the crinkle of the bag. One visible eye, big as a saucer and black as a dropped pip, slid sideways at her and then away again. "Not having any," she said. "Salt and vinegar. You'd hate it."
It stayed three days. Mr Okonedo from flat nine swore he saw it on the roof, and her brother said it was a bin bag with ideas. She brought it a satsuma, then a torn half of her gran's shortbread, then the last of the cheese and onion. It ate nothing, but she noticed it had moved a little closer to the shortbread each time, the way a cat decides a thing is not a trap. On the fourth morning the lift coughed back to life and the step was empty, except for a smear of blue where something had shifted its weight.
Nadia didn't tell anyone. That Friday, on the wall beside the chute, someone had drawn a blue shape in marker, sitting with its back turned, its ears wide as trays. Underneath, in careful capitals, it said THANKS FOR THE CHIPS.
